Introduction

I’m an atheist. That means I don’t believe in God or any kind of sentient omnipotent creator-of-all-existence. Atheism is at the core of everything I am. I’ve set up this section to expound on how I chose atheism and what it means to me. Before I go any further, I’d like to ask a few favors.

  • Keep an open mind – I’m not asking you to change what you believe, I just want to share my own perspective. It’s awfully hard to do that effectively if you’ve already made up your mind about me.
  • Don’t hate me – Seriously, it’s irrational. I don’t hate other people for what they choose to believe. I’ve run into so many people who are okay with diversity of faith, so long as it’s faith of some kind. As soon as someone finds out I have faith of NO KIND, then it’s as if I’ve become inhuman and immoral. Nothing could be further from the truth.
  • Give me the benefit of the doubt – In other words, let’s start off with positive assumptions. Let’s assume that I’m a decent, intelligent, and moral guy. If my subsequent musings dig a hole from there, then so be it. At least I started off on an even keel.

Okay, so my bullet items were three different ways of making the same point, but it’s a very important point that I feel needs to be covered before I say anything more on this topic. I honestly don’t understand why it’s not okay to be an atheist in this modern world. When I tell people I’m an atheist, I almost always get a reaction that is a mixture of incredulity, derision, fear, and contempt. The initial reaction is then followed up with some version of, “I feel sorry for you,” which brings me to my next point:

  • Don’t pity me – I’m not mentally ill or afflicted in any way. I very consciously and carefully chose to be what I am. I don’t suffer from a lack of spirituality and I don’t feel like there’s a big hole in my life that must be filled with faith in God or any sort of connection to a higher power. In fact, I find my decision to be an atheist quite fulfilling and wouldn’t trade it for anything.

That’s pretty much all I wanted to cover for my introduction. This blog is entirely my opinion and does not represent the opinion of other atheists in general, although I hope that many would agree with me. So if you’re willing to keep an open mind and reserve judgment, then feel free to explore my other articles on this subject. If not… well, thanks for stopping by.

NOTE: I welcome your comments, but please keep them objective and polite. Criticism is fine. In fact, I welcome a healthy discussion on this topic. However, I will delete any comments that are full of hatred and anger for the sake of hatred and anger.
